All communication with students will be done through Google Classroom.
Students will have a weekly assignment that is posted each Monday by 9am. The assignment will include: 1. Do Now- typically a Google Form 2. Instruction/ required assignment- Google Slides and a post with a video of me presenting the slides. There will be an assignment that I go through during this presentation. 3. Choice assignment- This will be posted and turned in in Google Classroom. 6th grade students will select at least 2 of the choices each week to complete. 4. Exit Ticket- typically a Google Form Turning in Journal Entries: Students will be journaling on paper and will need to take a photo of it to upload it to Google Classroom. Here’s a link for how to upload a photo to an assignment. They can take pictures directly from their computers. Please reach out if you would like help with this! Safety: As students will be going outside for nature journaling, please make sure they have a safe time and place to go. If it is not possible to go outside, students may work by a window or join an optional Wednesday live session. Live Lesson/ Discussion: Students have an opportunity to participate in a live class on Fridays from 12pm-12:30pm. We will share our week’s journals as we share stories from the week and be able to ask questions of Ms. Knipp and each other as we via Google Meet. Ms. Knipp will also host a “work session” on Wednesday from 1pm-1:30pm for students who want to complete the weekly required assignment together and ask questions. She is also available by email or Google Chat during the school days.

As we refine our scientific thinking skills, and practice following lab procedures, the 6th graders had their first two labs this past week! On Monday and Tuesday, students explored how adding weights to a paper parachute impacted the speed that it fell. This past Wednesday and Thursday, they compared two different types of diapers to see how much water they were able to hold. Of course, I put yellow food coloring in the water for fun!
This week our 6th grade classes worked together to complete two team challenges. In the first one, Save Fred, they could only use paperclips to move things and had to lift a cup and thread a gummy worm through a gummy lifesaver. In the next challenge students constructed a paper tower without glue or tape. They tried to reach the tallest possible height in 6 minutes, which was quite a struggle as it occasionally blew over! Check out some pictures of our challenges! 6th grade students will begin their year with discovering what it takes to be a scientist. Students will be competing group challenges and using group roles. Today they started with brainstorming ideas for class jobs and rules. Their reflective nature is helping us start the year with a safe and positive classroom!
