All communication with students will be done through Google Classroom.
Students will have a weekly assignment that is posted each Monday by 9am. The assignment will include: 1. Do Now- typically a Google Form 2. Instruction/ required assignment- Google Slides and a post with a video of me presenting the slides. There will be an assignment that I go through during this presentation. 3. Choice assignment- This will be posted and turned in in Google Classroom. 8th grade students will select at least 4 of the choices each week to complete. 4. Exit Ticket- typically a Google Form Turning in Journal Entries: Students will be journaling on paper and will need to take a photo of it to upload it to Google Classroom. Here’s a link for how to upload a photo to an assignment. They can take pictures directly from their computers. Please reach out if you would like help with this! Safety: As students will be going outside for nature journaling, please make sure they have a safe time and place to go. If it is not possible to go outside, students may work by a window or join an optional Wednesday live session. Live Lesson/ Discussion: Students have an opportunity to participate in a live class on Fridays from 12pm-12:30pm. We will share our week’s journals as we share stories from the week and be able to ask questions of Ms. Knipp and each other as we via Google Meet. If students need support in completing the assignment, ask for an invitation to the Wednesday work session. Ms. Knipp will host a “work session” on Wednesday from 1pm-1:30pm for students who want to complete the weekly required assignment together and ask questions. She is also available by email or Google Chat during the school days.

This week students performed an experiment of their own design. They chose experimental questions ranging from: Which type of paper makes a paper airplane fly the farthest? to "How does eating fast food affect my heart rate?" As students perfected their skills at writing scientific procedures, we took a break and decided to write directions for building a s'morewich snack. While working in pairs, students wrote step by step directions explaining how to put together the sandwich. Then they traded cards! At that point, they could only follow what was written on their cards. That's where it got interesting! This past week 8th grade continued to review content they have previously learned. We played team Kahoot! while reviewing graphing and cycles and ended the week with a challenge activity! Here's some pictures of the team challenge:
This week in science we began our Science Olympics! Students first divided into teams, choosing a team name, flag and victory dance. Our first event was building the tallest tower possible with only 8.5x11 paper. While this was frustrating for some, the teams came together and supported each other as they successfully achieved their goal! After the team building challenge, students competed in different events involving measurement, converting between the metric system and US standard units and finding creative ways to remember the order of prefixes. Next week we will continue our competitions, while we review science that has been previously learned and kick off the year together! |
